What Is DMP

“The psychotherapeutic use of movement and dance through which a person can engage creatively in a process to further their emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration”

-V. Karkou & P. Sanderson (2006).

Dance Movement Psychotherapy is a verbal and non-verbal form of creative Arts Therapies, using the body as a form of communication/ extension of self-expression. DMP focuses on the person as a whole by using movement-based interventions and verbal reflections.
People can hold onto feelings and emotions within their body; muscle memory is stored within us and experiences that have happened in the past (as far back as a baby) are within our subconscious movements. Dance movement psychotherapy helps to express, release and understand feelings and emotions, both past and present.
